Worth knowing

Professional or over-the-counter?

We're surrounded by adverts for whitening products. Dr Sonja Gligović explains why an in-clinic treatment is the only truly safe option.

Professional

  • A dentist assesses whether you're a suitable candidate
  • Gums are protected before treatment — no soft-tissue injury
  • Tested formula, correct dosage, controlled conditions
  • No damage to enamel and no lasting tooth sensitivity

Over-the-counter (at home)

  • No assessment of dental health — can make existing problems worse
  • No gum protection — chemical burns and injuries are possible
  • Unknown ingredients, with active substances often too strong or too weak
  • Permanent hypersensitivity and damage to the enamel

Professional whitening is the only correct and safe way to a brighter smile. Over-the-counter treatments are not just ineffective — they can be genuinely dangerous to oral health.

How the treatment goes

An hour to a new smile.

01
5 min

Quick check

We assess the current state of the teeth and whether any restorative work is needed first.

02
15 min

Thorough cleaning

Plaque and tartar are removed — the formula can only work on a properly clean surface.

03
3×15 min

Three whitening stages

Gums protected → formula applied to the tooth surface → three consecutive stages.

04
5 min

Aftercare advice

Proper brushing technique, the right toothbrush, and what to avoid over the next 5 days.

In short — we whiten the teeth to the shade you want in a single treatment. So far I haven't had a patient who wanted to go further after the first round.Dr Sonja Gligović

Honestly

Can I have the whitening done?

Whitening isn't for everyone. The conditions that need to be treated first, or that are an outright contraindication:

Active decay

Any cavities must be treated before whitening.

Gingivitis or inflamed gums

Acute inflammation — the gums must be healthy before treatment.

Tartar build-up

A thorough cleaning is required first; the formula can't work through deposits.

Acute pathology

Cysts, lesions at the root apex, acute tooth infections.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

As a precaution, whitening isn't performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

All of these are picked up at the specialist examination, and most can be addressed before the whitening itself.

After the treatment

How to maintain the result.

Whitened teeth are still natural teeth — they take on colour from food and drink. Here's what to avoid for the first 5 days and how to make the effect last for years.

Coffee, espresso
avoid for 5 days
Red wine
avoid for 5 days
Blueberries, blackberries
avoid for 5 days
Turmeric, paprika
avoid for 5 days

After 5 days — back to normal

With proper oral hygiene (brushing after every meal, floss, an interdental brush or water flosser) the effect lasts for years. During the treatment, Dr Sonja Gligović will walk you through the right technique and which tools to use.

Questions

Before you book.

How much does professional teeth whitening cost?

The standard treatment costs €200 (24,000 RSD) and takes about an hour. For Dental Med NS patients who have completed orthodontic treatment with us there's a special offer of €150 (18,000 RSD).

Is professional whitening the same as over-the-counter (at-home) whitening?

No. Professional whitening is the only correct and safe way to a brighter smile. Over-the-counter products that promise instant results are ineffective — and often genuinely dangerous to oral health (enamel damage, hypersensitivity, gum injuries).

Can anyone have whitening done?

No. Whitening is contraindicated with certain gum conditions (gingivitis), decay and some oral pathologies. A dentist will determine at the examination whether you're a suitable candidate.

What does the whitening procedure look like?

First, an examination to assess the state of the teeth and whether any restorative work is needed. Then a thorough cleaning to remove deposits (the formula can only work on a clean surface). Next, a professional gum barrier is applied and the whitening formula goes onto the teeth, in three 15-minute stages — about an hour in total.

How many shades brighter will the teeth be?

We whiten the teeth to whatever shade you want. If they start out particularly dark and you want them noticeably whiter, the treatment can be repeated after 15 days and that's included in the same price. So far I haven't had a patient who wanted more after the first round — everyone has been delighted with the result.

Is whitening painful?

Brief, intermittent pain during whitening is normal — it comes and goes. After the procedure there's no pain and no lasting sensitivity. That's exactly why it matters to have whitening done professionally — over-the-counter products can leave permanent hypersensitivity.

Do I need to change any habits after whitening?

It's best to avoid strongly coloured food and drink for the next 5 days (coffee, red wine, turmeric, blueberries and so on). After that, life as normal — with an emphasis on good oral hygiene.

How long does the whitening effect last?

Whitened teeth are still natural teeth and pick up colour from food and drink. With brushing after every meal and the use of floss, an interdental brush or a water flosser, the effect lasts for years. Without proper care, the effect slowly fades.

What do I get with the treatment at Dental Med NS?

Alongside the treatment itself you get education on the right brushing technique and choice of toothbrush, maintenance recommendations and advice on extending the effect. All of that is part of the price.

Is whitening done before or after orthodontic treatment?

Always after. Whitening is performed on teeth in their final position. If you're planning fixed braces or aligners, Dr Sonja Gligović recommends whitening after the appliance comes off, as the final aesthetic step.
