Honest about clear aligners

What clear aligners can and can't do?

Clear aligners aren't a solution for everyone. Before recommending them, I look at whether they're the right choice for you specifically.

What they can do

  • Mild aesthetic corrections of tooth crowns
  • Tooth movement after not wearing a retainer (relapse after fixed braces)
  • Discreet treatment with no visible appliance
  • Treatment with infrequent check-ups (ideal if you live outside Novi Sad)

What they can't

  • Moving tooth roots (crowns only)
  • Correcting bite or function
  • Major tooth movement problems
  • Treatment for children and adolescents

It's important to stress that aligner treatment has narrow indications. Aligners can't move tooth roots, so you shouldn't believe in various promises and 'easy solutions'.

What clear aligners are

Thin, clear, barely noticeable

Aligners, also known as clear or invisible braces, are thin transparent appliances custom-made to fit your teeth. You wear them day and night and only remove them to eat and clean your teeth, everything else you do as normal.

The biggest advantage: colleagues, clients and those around you rarely even notice you're wearing them.

Treatment price
€100 to €150

The exact price depends on case complexity and is set at the consultation. Retention aligners: €100 (12,000 RSD).

I can't review the dental services, but the customer service is terrible. I didn't even get a response. If you're not taking new clients, just say so.

3 patient profiles for clear aligners

Not every solution suits everyone. Here's where clear aligners truly shine.

Profile 01

Adults, mild corrections

Adults with minor aesthetic issues: a few crooked front teeth, small gaps. They don't want a visible appliance at work or in professional settings.

Profile 02

Former braces wearers

The ideal profile: patients who wore fixed braces but whose teeth have slightly shifted from the ideal position because they didn't wear a retainer. Aligners bring them back.

Profile 03

Patients living outside Novi Sad

Aligners require infrequent check-ups (every 3 weeks), so they're ideal for patients living outside Novi Sad who can't visit often.

Not sure if you're the right candidate? Book a consultation, I'll tell you honestly.

Honest assessment

Benefits and limitations

Clear aligners aren't a solution for everyone. Before recommending them, I look at whether they're the right choice for you specifically.

Benefits

  • Almost invisible, clear aligners discreetly straighten teeth
  • Removable for eating, brushing and special occasions
  • Ideal for patients who live far from the clinic (infrequent check-ups)
  • A good option for former fixed-braces wearers with minor relapse

Limitations

  • Only for mild aesthetic issues, not a replacement for fixed braces
  • Can't correct bite or move tooth roots
  • Recommended only for adults with permanent teeth
  • Paid in full on collection, no instalment plans
Practical guidelines

How to handle your aligners properly

Without proper removal and cleaning, aligners can crack. Follow these guidelines and everything runs like clockwork.

01

From both sides

Always remove and insert with both sides of the dental arch evenly. Don't tilt to one side.

02

Clean teeth

Aligners go on only over clean teeth. Brush before every insertion.

03

Non-abrasive toothpaste

Clean aligners with a brush and a mild, non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid whitening toothpastes, they damage the clear material.

04

Remove for eating

Always remove your aligners while eating or drinking anything other than water. Put them back after brushing.

Patient experiences

What everyday life looks like with clear aligners?

Patients wearing clear aligners typically go through several clear phases. Experiences are similar because the treatment is structured, but everyone has their own adjustment rhythm. Here's what most people experience.

01

The first few days

Mild pressure on the teeth, especially when you switch to a new aligner series. Speech is slightly altered for the first few hours; the brain adapts quickly. The biggest challenge is getting used to taking the aligners out before every meal.

02

The first month

Aligners become part of the daily routine. Patients wear them 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating and brushing. A subtle shift in the front teeth is already visible, extra motivation to persevere.

03

During treatment

Check-ups at the clinic are infrequent, usually every 3 to 4 weeks, when new impressions are taken and the plan is adjusted. Patients living outside Novi Sad particularly love this aspect: less travelling compared with fixed braces.

04

After treatment

Once treatment is complete, retention aligners worn at night are essential. Without retention, teeth naturally tend to return to their original position; with retention the result stays stable for years.

After treatment

Retention with the last aligners

Once teeth reach their desired position, the last aligners stay on as retention. Worn only at night, for as long as you want to maintain the result.

Recommendation: for life. Teeth naturally tend to return to their original position, everything needs maintenance.

Bonus protection

They also protect against bruxism

Retention aligners worn at night serve a dual purpose: they also protect teeth from grinding and wear (bruxism), which most people experience at some point in life, often without realising it.

FAQs

Before you book

How much does aligner treatment cost in Novi Sad?

At Dental Med NS the price ranges from €100 to €150 (12,000–18,000 RSD) per aligner series. The exact price depends on the number of stages and case complexity, and is set after the consultation. Payment is in full on collection.

What can't aligners do?

Aligners can't move tooth roots, only crowns. They don't correct bite, change the distance between jaws, or solve serious irregularities. Don't believe in 'easy solutions' that promise everything, that isn't realistic.

When are aligners the ideal option?

For former fixed-braces wearers whose teeth have slightly shifted because they didn't wear a retainer. For mild aesthetic corrections where a small amount of crown movement is enough. Particularly useful for patients who don't live in Novi Sad, fewer check-ups means less travelling.

Is there an age restriction for aligners?

Aligners are only an option for adult patients with all permanent teeth. For children and adolescents, treatment goes through removable braces (Myobrace) or fixed braces, on Dr Sonja's recommendation at the consultation.

How many hours a day are aligners worn?

Aligners are worn day and night, removed only for eating and oral hygiene. The more time on the teeth, the faster the result. Always insert them on clean teeth.

Do aligners hurt?

Aligners don't hurt. When you put on a new series you may feel mild pressure for the first few days, that's a sign teeth are moving. As a rule it's much less uncomfortable than fixed braces.

How long does aligner treatment take?

It depends on case complexity, typically 3 to 9 months for mild corrections. For more complex cases it takes longer, but in those cases fixed braces are often the better choice. I give an exact plan after the consultation and impressions.

How do you handle an aligner properly?

It's important to carefully remove and insert the aligner with both sides of the dental arch at the same time, evenly. Without even handling the aligner can physically crack. Clean it with a brush and non-abrasive toothpaste.

What's the procedure like?

Consultation with Dr Sonja → impressions are taken → the next day you collect your finished aligners → fitting at the clinic → you begin active wear. After 3 weeks, a check-up with new impressions for the next series, and so on until you reach your desired result.

What happens after the aligners come off?

The last aligners become retention aligners and are worn only at night. Without retention, teeth naturally tend to return to their original position. Bonus: retention aligners also protect against bruxism (teeth grinding in sleep). Recommendation: for life.
Next step

Are clear aligners the right solution for you?

I'll tell you honestly at the consultation. If they aren't, I'll suggest a better option. If they are, treatment starts the very next day.
